The enclosed policy is our current winter maintenance guideline for Buffalo County Highways established by the Buffalo County Highway Committee.
All County Trunk Highways in Buffalo County (Lettered Highways) No service from 6:00 P.M. to 4:00 A.M. No service on weekends and holidays except to keep roads passable. The county roads are considered to be passable and open for travel when they are negotiable by vehicles equipped with reasonably conditioned all weather tires. During major winter storms, the county may terminate all plowing activity until such time when plowing is effective for opening and maintaining highways for travel. The application of abrasives (sand) will be the only product used to increase traction. Sanding will be limited to hills and curves in most cases. It is the intent of Buffalo County to plow and sand as soon as practical after a storm, however, full width clean-up and grading will be limited to regular working hours and is dependent on weather and availability of equipment.
The county patrol sections may not be checked on a daily basis. To assist the Highway Department in reporting any hazardous highway conditions or anyone requiring emergency service should contact the Highway Office (608) 685-6226 during business hours Monday – Thursday (6:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.) or the Sheriff’s Office (608) 685-4433 during non-business hours. In case of an emergency dial 911.Remember! Leave room for snowplow trucks – stay back 200 feet (it’s the law!)
